My God is…My Father Romans 8:14-17

Romans 8:14-17

For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs —heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

My Dad’s Better than your Dad

I remember in grade school, a good friend of mine, Mindy and I would argue about whose dad was better, and though she made some sound arguments (including the fact that her dad really could beat my dad up), I was sure she was wrong. She had an amazing dad. I used to go camping with them, and he was a lot of fun to be around. She was right her dad was really wonderful.

I was right too

My dad is the best dad for me. He is kind and compassionate. He’s a laugh riot, if you’re into corny puns a fourth grade teacher would tell (I am into corny puns, and he was a fourth grade teacher – so it works for him). When I was young, he would come and watch my golf matches. Could there be anything more boring to watch? But he was there, always there to support us and encourage my sister and I. He still is. He’s amazing. He loves his Lord, loves his wife, and loves his girls (and his grandkids of course).

There is a Father who is better than my dad

I’m a child of God. I was adopted in. “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.” We don’t have to live in fear of our Father in Heaven. Some father’s here on earth do cause their children to rightly fear them (not in a good way). The are abusive, unkind or neglectful. But our Father in Heaven is not one of those Fathers. He has chosen us. He loves us and sacrificed his Son to die so that we might be adopted. He sent His Spirit to us that we might be adopted, and become heirs. So we might inherit a life in the Kingdom of Heaven.

So when I’m talking about my Heavenly Father, my dad is better than your dad!
