Deuteronomy 10:21 – He is your praise; he is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome
things that your own eyes have seen.
He is your praise
This is kind of an archaic use of praise as a noun. According to Websters Dictionary – when you use praise as a noun like it’s used in this sentence, it means “one that is praised“. So let’s rewrite that part of the sentence with the definition in there – He is your one that is praised. God is our praise. He is truly the only thing that does deserve our praise. Our children get our praise, but not because they truly earned it. Everything we do, are and have comes from the Lord, so everything turns us back to praise our praise, to praise our God.
He is your God
Definition of GOD
1 capitalized: the supreme or ultimate reality
2: a being or object believed to have more than natural attributes and powers and to require human worship;specifically : one controlling a particular aspect or part of reality
3: a person or thing of supreme value
4: a powerful ruler
So often we are led astray by seemingly innocuous things. Admiration of a sports star or a movie star can turn to obsession. A drink after work can turn to addiction. Making money becomes the most important thing to us. Striving to have the perfect body keeps us from caring for and participating in our family. Then there are those things that are bad from the start. An abusive boyfriend, a manipulative friend, or a berating boss might have been given god status because we let them be “one controlling a particular aspect or part of reality”. When we let things distract us or control us, we’re not putting God at the head of our lives. We need to have an obsession with God. We need to be in His word so much we can’t go without it. We need to be praying so often we don’t know if we’ve ever stopped. Do we need to do those for salvation, they don’t earn our salvation, but doing them will keep our eyes on the Lord, daily recalling His sacrifice on the cross for us. We couldn’t do anything to cause our own salvation, but doing those things could ensure it. How can I say that, because if you do those things, are in God’s word and are praying to Him constantly, your focus is in the right place, and you will remain in a close relationship with Him. Your faith in Jesus, sparked by the Holy Spirit, through scripture will ensure your salvation.
Who has done for you these great and awesome things that your own eyes have seen.
Have you seen some great and awesome things that the Lord has done? I encourage you to write a list of your blessings. Then I pray that as you go through your day today, you will see God wink at you. Not a real wink (I’m not crazy), but sometimes I feel like God is winking at me through even the mundane things in my life. Maybe things are just working out today. Maybe your friend calls just as you were about to call her. Maybe your mom and dad are so much fun to talk to on the phone they make you laugh and be happy (yes – I did just do that!). To me the Lord is in all of these things. God is with us in all that we do, try to notice Him today. Then pray. Have a conversation with Him, the one who has done for you these great and awesome things that you saw with your own eyes.
What great and awesome things have you seen with your own eyes?
