My God is…caring for you 1 Peter 5:7

1 Peter 5:7 – Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.????????

Ok, I think for this one we’re going to break down this verse by definitions of the words.

Cast

The definition for cast was so long, we’re just going to look at the first definition as it’s the one that pertains to this verse.
Definition of CAST

transitive verb
1a : to cause to move or send forth by throwing <cast a fishing lure> <cast dice>
 : direct <cast a glance>
c (1) : to put forth <the fire casts a warm glow> <cast light on the subject> (2) : to place as if by throwing <cast doubt on their reliability>
: to deposit (a ballot) formally
 e (1) : to throw off or away <the horse cast a shoe> (2) : to get rid of : discard <cast off all restraint> (3) : shedmolt(4) : to bring forth; especially : to give birth to prematurely
: to throw to the ground especially in wrestling
: to build by throwing up earth

I don’t know about you, but when I hear the word cast, I think of fishing (not because I fish, I don’t really). Imagine yourself grabbing hold of all your anxiety and pulling back with your anxieties over your shoulder. Then with a strong thrust you throw off your anxieties. You cast them off like a fisherman casts his line. Or maybe you cast it like I picture Samson, holding a big boulder over your head (trying to be as strong as Samson) and then you throw it as hard as you can (maybe aimed at the devil). Or maybe even shot putting it as far away from you as you can. Imagine it. Really Imagine it. For me just thinking about it relieves some of the anxiety.

Anxiety

Definition of ANXIETY

1a : painful or apprehensive uneasiness of mind usually over an impending or anticipated ill
 : fearful concern or interest
 : a cause of anxiety
2: an abnormal and overwhelming sense of apprehension and fear often marked by physiological signs (as sweating, tension, and increased pulse), by doubt concerning the reality and nature of the threat, and by self-doubt about one’s capacity to cope with it

When we’re anxious, often it feels like no one has ever felt the way we felt. Especially if we have major anxiety that has all the physical manifestations along with it. No one seems to understand. No one knows how you feel. And here on earth that might be true, but Jesus understands. In Mark 14, He shows us that He understands, ” And he said to them, “I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and keep awake.” He was so upset He could die. He understands. I love that the scriptures has the word anxiety in it, because it shows us that God is aware of our plight. He understands what’s going on in our lives, hearts and minds. He wants to address it with you.

On Him

Remember when I said to imagine yourself casting off all your anxiety? Do it again and imagine casting it off to the One who can actually take care of it. Right now I’m picturing myself casting off my anxiety, sins and frustrations to God who happens to have a box like the Ghostbusters used to capture ghosts. I cast them off to Him. He’s safely collecting them from me so that He can dispose of them properly.

Because He cares for you

Definition of CARE

1: suffering of mind : grief
2a : a disquieted state of mixed uncertainty, apprehension, and responsibility
: a cause for such anxiety
3a : painstaking or watchful attention
 : maintenance <floor-care products>
4: regard coming from desire or esteem
5: chargesupervision <under a doctor’s care>
6: a person or thing that is an object of attention, anxiety, or solicitude

Ok, to be honest, this definition just blew my mind. Maybe I’m the only one, but I didn’t know the strong correlation between anxiety and care. I think this definition makes this verse so much more powerful. Read through that definition again. He thinks about you. He mourns your losses. He feels your pain. He is watching over you with painstaking attention. He keeps you going and working properly. He regards you. He is in charge of you and supervising you. You are the object of His attention. This concept brings tears to my eyes. I see myself coming to Jesus, crying because I feel like things are out of control. Like a good father He holds me and says, I’ll take care of it. If you’re a parent, maybe you can relate. If you child comes to you, practically falling to your feet because they are so overwhelmed, you too would do whatever you could (and God can do anything) do for your child. You want to make things better. God wants to make things better for you. Trust Him, He can do this for you.

Who cares for you?

My God is…the protector of widows Psalm 68:4-5

Psalm 68:4-5 –

Sing to God, sing praises to his name; a-grandma-looking-at-ocean
lift up a song to him who rides upon the clouds
his name is the Lord –
be exultant before him.

Father of orphans and protector of widows
is God in his holy habitation.

I have a 50/50 chance

I have a 50/50 chance of becoming a widow. Actually it’s probably more than that, because my husband is 7 1/2 years my elder (any statisticians out there want to give me my odds?). With the probability being relatively high that I may one day become a widow, this verse means a lot to me.

Who loves me more than my husband?

I can’t think of anyone who would be quicker than my husband to come to my rescue. If I were in danger, if I were in pain, if my car broke down, my husband would be there (or make a true effort at least). He would be concerned about me. When you’re in a good strong marriage, you can rest assured that someone’s got your back. You and your spouse are a unit. You work together for your common good (in a perfect world). So what happens when your spouse isn’t able to help you?

If my husband had been there

When I had my initial MS attack, my husband was in the Middle East. It was a very scary time for me, but my husband wasn’t able to be the guy I lean on. So who did I lean on (besides my friend Kara)? I leaned on God. Not right away though. First I yelled at Him for being so inconsiderate as giving me a disease that can debilitate a person. I was frustrated and scared. But then I had a sort of “coming to Jesus moment”. I was crying in my kitchen over my newly diagnosed condition, and I prayed to God. I prayed something like, why did you do this to me? At first my prayer was gilded with anger, then acceptance, “Lord if I’m going to have this, make me strong so I can be a witness. If I need a walker, it’s going to be the most blinged out walker, a cheerful walker.” Then my prayer turned to peace. I felt as if God said to me directly, don’t worry about your earthly body. It’s temporary. One day you’ll be with me in heaven, and none of this will matter. Now of course I didn’t hear His voice, but I felt His answer. If my husband had been around, I may have relied on him instead of God, and I never would have experienced the peace I felt that day.

She’s got to have a man in her life

My grandma was an amazing woman of faith. She loved the Lord above all else. Her husband died when he was about 70. She was around 62. She died when she was 96. Sadly my grandma didn’t feel good as a widow. She always felt better if she had a man in her life. Someone to lean on. She craved the companionship a relationship brings. I don’t know if it was the era in which she was raised or the family in which she was raised, but I believe she felt her calling was to be a wife, a partner…a companion. I’m a lot like her. Since my dating years, I have not been out of a relationship for long. I often found approval through relationships.  I’m grateful I have the best husband now, but I pray that if one day I become a widow, that I will crave companionship with the Lord more than that of men. That I won’t feel that I need them, when I know who protects me.

Father of orphans and protector of widows

God protects those who can’t protect themselves. He protects the vulnerable. He looks out for the little guy. So whether you’re a widow or orphan right now, or someone who is emotionally or physically vulnerable, the Lord is your protector. Turn to Him. Trust Him. He loves you and will fill the gaps that you feel in your life. Read scripture and hear his words for you. Know that you have a Father in heaven who has your best interest at heart. Cling to His promises (like I cling to the promise of eternal life when I think about the debilitation that could come from MS). Know that in the end you will be with Him in heaven. He has your back, and will see you through to the end. Trust in Him.

Are you an orphan or a widow?

My God is…Ready to relent from punishing Jonah 4:2

Jonah 4:2 – He prayed to the Lord and said, “O Lord! Is not this what I said while I was still in my own country? Bible Series Jonah sepiaThat is why I fled to Tarshish at the beginning; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and ready to relent from punishing.

The reluctant witness

Jonah was a reluctant witness. He didn’t want to go to Nineveh. Why not? Didn’t he want others to know about God? Not the Ninevites. They were evil, and Jonah didn’t think that they deserved to be saved. What I love is that Jonah was sure of the character of his God. Even though Jonah was being sent to Nineveh to tell them that they were doing evil in the site of the Lord, Jonah knew that if they showed remorse and changed there ways that God would have pity on them. That’s why Jonah tried to sail to Tarshish and get out of telling the prophecy. Jonah didn’t want the Ninevites to escape destruction.

Jonah is a witness to us too

While Jonah didn’t want to go to Nineveh, his faith can increase our faith. He didn’t run to Tarshish because he didn’t believe in God, but because he knew God so well. Because of Jonah’s testimony, we are able to see that he had faith that our God was gracious, merciful, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and ready to relent from punishing. These are amazing things to know about our God, and Jonah didn’t just think them, he knew them. Jonah was so sure that God was all of these things, he went to Tarshish, because He knew God would give Nineveh a second chance.

We can rest assured

Has your faith ever increased because of the witness of someone else. Has someone sharing their testimony (why they know God is God) strengthened your faith? It has happened to me. That’s part of the reason it’s important for us to be in relationships with other believers. Their faith in the one true God helps to build and confirm our faith. We hear their stories about God’s work in their lives, and our faith increases. We are assured of His presence. Through the testimonies in scripture, the Holy Spirit’s testimony and the testimony of other believers, we are able to get a fuller picture of the character of our Lord.

Sharing your story

Since the testimony in scripture, from the Holy Spirit and our loved ones is so important to our faith, we too are called to share our testimony. To share what the Lord has done in our lives. You don’t have to preach it from the mountain tops necessarily (but kudos if you do), but even in a quiet conversation with a friend who is struggling, the Holy Spirit working through your faith can help to increase and strengthen your friend’s faith.

Acts 22:14-16 – Then he said, ‘The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will, to see the Righteous One and to hear his own voice;  for you will be his witness to all the world of what you have seen and heard. And now why do you delay? Get up, be baptized, and have your sins washed away, calling on his name.’

And now why do you delay?

My God is…Preparing a place for me

John 14:1-7 – “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house therereserved are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

“I’ve got to clean the house, my parents are coming into town.”

These are the words I have often said just before a visit from my parents. I want everything to be just right for them when they come to my house. I want them to feel at home or better yet comfortable. My house is their house. I want them to want to spend time with me in my home.

I go and prepare a place for you

Jesus too wants us to come to where He is. He doesn’t want us to come and visit, He wants us to move in. He’s making sure everything is ready for us and is preparing a place specifically for you and I. What kinds of things do you do to get the house ready for someone to stay with you? Maybe you clean, dust, change the sheets, clean up the bathrooms, clean up the yard, maybe even spruce things up with a new coat of paint. We want to pay attention to the details. What makes you comfortable when you go to spend time with people? Maybe it’s the extra soft towels, the bottles of water in your room, the toiletries in the bathroom or something else. Often those things aren’t even necessary, because spending time with the people you came to see is the most important. Jesus knows that too. He wants to have us where He is, because He wants to be in relationship with Him.

I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.

“Let us catch a cab from the airport.” I don’t like it when I hear someone say that to me. I love to pick people up from the airport. I love the exciting drive home getting to chat with one another and rekindle our friendships in just a few minutes. I want to go pick them up myself, so that I can spend as much time with them as possible. When Jesus returns, it’s the same thing. He is coming back to get us, so that where He is, we will be. He doesn’t want to waste a single second of that time we could have together. He’s preparing a place for us, and He wants to personally escort us there. He has so many blessings for us waiting in Heaven, but the biggest blessing that will outshine them all is being fully in God’s presence, and knowing fully with our hearts and mind that Jesus cares for us and is honoring our relationship with Him. Not because of anything we’ve done, mind you, but because of who He is.

A place is being prepared for you!

My God is…Multiplying his wondrous deeds Psalm 40:5

Psalm 40:5 – You have multiplied, O Lord my God, glass-of-water-sky
your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us;
none can compare with you.
Were I to proclaim and tell of them,
they would be more than can be counted.

You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us

Sometimes people tell me that they haven’t really had anything bad happen to them in their lives. They haven’t suffered a tragedy, loss of a loved one or loss of a job. Some might say their lives are truly blessed, but I always think “watch out”!!!! Why? Because I think that as we go through life, the Lord allows us to have troubles and trials so that we might grow in Him. The verse above was written by David after a victory in battle. I find that when I have come through something that looks insurmountable, I have feelings very similar to what David is expressing here. If I have just had a problem resolved or heard about one resolved for a friend, I might say, “God is good.” God is good all the time, but when we’ve been going through something, we see more clearly how much we rely on Him and His Goodness.

Were I to proclaim and tell of them,
they would be more than can be counted.

Have you ever been dehydrated? Have you ever felt like you were just going to die if you didn’t get something to drink soon. I think that’s how it sometimes feels while we’re going through trials. We may not feel like the Lord is around, or that we’re in dire need of a drink of the Lord. We’re dehydrated in our faith. We’ve got nothing left to give. But God does. He’s got what you need to be nourished and sustain you. He’s got the refreshing life-giving water that will rejuvenate you. Then when you get that dose of the Holy Spirit (through scripture, worship, praise music, revelation, prayer etc) you’re amazed at how good it tastes. How good the Lord is. You had momentarily forgotten, but now you must sing His praises at every turn. He is more real to you now than ever before. Like an ice-cold glass of water when you’re feeling dehydrated. You are soothed, comforted and amazed. You’re sure someone has given you special water. It tastes better than any other drink you’ve ever had. When we come out of a trial we are also often more aware of the blessings we had all along. The goodness and mercy of our Lord. His favor for His children. We are blessed beyond compare.

Are you dehydrated?

My God is…Blessing Psalm 24:4-6

Psalm 24:4-6 – Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, blessing
who do not lift up their souls to what is false,
and do not swear deceitfully.
They will receive blessing from the Lord,
and vindication from the God of their salvation.
Such is the company of those who seek him,
who seek the face of the God of Jacob.

Definition of BLESS

1: to hallow or consecrate by religious rite or word
2: to hallow with the sign of the cross
3: to invoke divine care for <bless your heart> —used in the phrase bless you to wish good health especially to one who has just sneezed
4 a : praiseglorify <bless his holy name>
: to speak well of : approve
5: to confer prosperity or happiness upon
archaic : protectpreserve
7: endowfavor <blessed with athletic ability>

Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls to what is false, and do not swear deceitfully.

Ok, let’s clarify something from the get go, this is an Old Testament verse. Since it is from the Old Testament it may seem a bit heavy on law. You’ll see that it is telling us what seems like a list of things we must do to get salvation. It is not for our salvation, but rather because of our salvation through Jesus Christ that we can have clean hands, a pure heart, are not distracted by other gods and idols, and do not swear deceitfully. I think we can all agree these are good things to work towards doing (or not doing).

They will receive blessing from the Lord, and vindication from the God of their salvation

This verse is Old Testament, but speaks of the grace we find in Jesus Christ, the God of our salvation. I want you to take a look at the definitions of bless above.

1: to hallow or consecrate by religious rite or word
2: to hallow with the sign of the cross

When God blesses us, it is a call to live like the first part of the word. He is setting us apart for holy work. Not Holy with a capital “H”, but holy that means we do everything in our life with God in mind. God wants to be at the center of our life, with our eyes focused on Him. He doesn’t want us to turn our minds toward someone or something else to bring us our happiness. When we were baptized, the pastor makes a cross across your forehead and your heart. He is blessing you, marking you as part of God’s family.

3: to invoke divine care for <bless your heart> —used in the phrase bless you to wish good health especially to one who has just sneezed

We are also blessed by God that He cares for our needs. In Matthew 6:25-34 we read about the Lord’s provision for us, and a reminder that because we are set apart and blessed, we don’t need to worry.
Matthew 6:25-34 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?

5: to confer prosperity or happiness upon

archaic : protectpreserve
7: endowfavor <blessed with athletic ability>

God can also bless us in our earthly lives. Beyond supplying us with our needs, He works good things in our lives. He even takes situations that look like they have no hope, and give us hope. He promises to work all things for our good in Romans 8:28, “We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” We are blessed by being set apart as His family. We are blessed to be set apart to do His work here on earth. We are blessed that in all things God is working for our best interests. We are blessed that though we are sinful, we have a God who provided a way out of death through His Son Jesus Christ. We are blessed to know we will spend eternity in Heaven with Him.

Do you feel blessed?

My God is…lifting up His countenance upon you – Numbers 6:22-27

Numbers 6:22-27 – The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall Happy in the mountainsbless the Israelites: You shall say to them, The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. So they shall put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.

Definition of COUNTENANCE

obsolete : bearingdemeanor
2 a : calm expression
   : mental composure
   : lookexpression
archaic
   : aspectsemblance
   : pretense
4: facevisageespecially : the face as an indication of mood, emotion, or character
5: bearing or expression that offers approval or sanction :moral support
The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the Israelites
I’m sure many of you have heard this verse as a benediction at the end of a sermon or a service. And you may think that’s nice that the pastor wants those things for us. Truthfully it is not the pastor, but God who wants all of these things for us. He wants to bless us. The section saying, “The Lord spoke to Moses, saying” may be the most important part of the verse to me. Why? Because it’s not just something Moses or Aaron came up with on their own. It’s not just traditional mumbo-jumbo. This blessing is from God. He told Moses what to have Aaron (and his sons) to say. This blessing is from God, and as adopted children of God, we too get to be part of this blessing.
The Lord bless you and keep you
God wants you to be blessed, and He does not want you to be separated from Him. You are important to Him. You are so important He sent His Son to die for your sins, to rise again, conquering death so that you may live. He is keeping you.
The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you
Picture it. Picture the Lord making His face to shine upon you. Are you blocking the rays or soaking them up. Are you letting the Lord’s blessings sink into your skin, into your very being, or are you putting up your arms to keep them off of you. Do you hide under a tree to keep it away from you, afraid of what it might expose. God wants to shine on you. Giving you the grace that only comes from Him.
The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace
This is the key part of the reading we’re looking at for today. God is blessing us, telling us that He will lift up His countenance upon you. What do you think that means? From the definition of countenance above, which refers to countenance as “: calm expression, : mental composure: lookexpression,” I think it means that God wants us to see that He’s not freaking out. He’s not over-reacting. When the waves in the boat started to make things too choppy for the disciples, they ran to Jesus, woke Him up and wanted Him to calm the seas, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” Jesus calmly got up and calmed the storm (Matthew 8:23-27). How would you have reacted? When your child runs into your room telling you they just got sick all over their room, do you react calmly or freak out? When we run to God and tell Him how much life is hard for us, He doesn’t freak out, because He’s got it all under control. He’s got a calm expression or countenance. He’s not going to contribute to your crazy, in fact, He (and only He) can give you peace when stuff is hitting the fan.
So they shall put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.
As adopted children into the family of God that started with the Israelites, we have God’s name put upon us. As Christians, we have God’s countenance upon us, and can live with peace. That allows us to reflect that same countenance to others. Not from ourselves, but because of what the Lord has done for us.
The other day, I got a text from my sister. It was a terrible picture of my nephews knee. He had a chainsaw injury. I didn’t speak directly with my sister, but even through her texts, she conveyed that it wasn’t as serious as it looked or sounded. So after my initial shock, I was calm (but still a bit shook up). I knew that if my sister wasn’t freaking out, neither should I. Later in the evening I thought about the fact that my parents didn’t know about it (because they don’t text and my sister was still in the emergency room with her son) and would want to pray about it. So I called to tell them their grandson had a chainsaw injury. Big mistake. I called and asked if they had talked to my sister, but because I was not on the scene and must not have delivered the news in the same calm manner, my parents kind of flipped out. I tried to explain to them that he was fine, and even about my sister’s demeanor in her texts, but they would not be satisfied until they talked to my sister. When they did, they too believed that their grandson would be ok. Often we’re the same way, unless we’re looking at Jesus, keeping our focus on Him, we freak out at things that happen to us or are told to us by others. We react in fear. But when we look to our Father in Heaven, when we read His scripture, pray and confer with other Christians, we are assured of God’s calm resolve. That He’s got it under control, and He’s not freaking out, so there’s no reason for us to freak out. We can rest assured that the Lord will bless us with His peace.
Are you freaking out?

My God is…My keeper Psalm 121

Psalm 121 –

I lift up my eyes to the hills—security
from where will my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
He who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time on and forevermore.

Definition of KEEPER

1: one that keeps: as
    : protector
    : gamekeeper
    c : warden
    d : custodian
    chiefly British : curator
2: any of various devices for keeping something in position
3  a : one suitable for or worth keeping: as (1) : a fruit or vegetable that keeps well (2) : a fish large enough to be legally caught and kept (3) : one having genuine or lasting merit <their new album is a keeper>
: a domestic animal considered with respect to how easy it is to care for <an easy keeper>
5: an offensive football play in which the quarterback runs with the ball

No sleeping on the job

Looking at the definition of keeper, you quickly see the list of jobs that are considered keepers. Keepers are people who protect something important. There is something of value which someone else would want to take away. If you’re a good keeper you don’t go to sleep on the job. Often in movies we see security guards who are hired to be keepers of a building, safe, or anything else of importance falling asleep on the job. I pray it’s not as common as it is shown in movies, but I fear it probably is true. As humans it’s hard for us to be vigilant all the time. For God though, we are assured in this Psalm that “He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.” God is not going to be falling asleep on the job. He’s vigilant on your behalf.

The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.

It’s like the Lord is our Secret Service. He’s aware of everything that is going on around us. He’s protecting us from the evil one at all times. Like the secret service, He can see threats we can’t see. He knows that the seemingly innocent drink with the interesting stranger might not be what it seems. He knows that those who act like your friends aren’t always true friends. The devil is constantly working to lead us off course. God is constantly working to keep us. He never sleeps. If the devil and God were the only two involved, God would always win, but sadly we’re part of the equation. We often think we know better than God. We think that drinks with the handsome man from work is fine, because he’s only a friend. But the Lord knows our heart. He knows if you’re truly tempted by that person (or if they are with you). We put ourselves in situations that can get us into trouble.

You’re a keeper

You are super important to God. If it weren’t so, why would He be your keeper? By definition, the one keeping something is highly valuing the thing they’re keeping. God wants to protect you from the devil. In this sinful world, the devil still has some power, and he can throw a wrench into things. He stirs up trouble. Most of which we could avoid. When a president is being kept by the secret service, the president is briefed about how they’re all going to behave at certain events. The secret service has briefed the president on the safest way to behave. Sometimes a president will go rogue. He’ll decide he knows better than the secret service. He’ll go into a crowd where it is harder to protect him. The president might turn a different direction where there isn’t any proper protection. We’re the same way. God has shown us the way, through His Son Jesus, in scripture. Many of us know it well. Scripture tells us all sorts of things, for example the ten commandments, that would help us to remain safe. God wants us to be safe, and the closer we are to Him, the safer we are. Ultimately God is not as concerned with our physical safety as our spiritual safety. In fact sometimes He uses an injury or an ailment (that one might see as God not protecting us) as His way of ensuring our faith and securing our relationship with Him.

The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.

The Lord is protecting your life, your eternal life. He has done everything necessary for your eternal life. He has prepared you. He has paid the price with His own son’s blood on the cross to make sure that you would be able to live forever with Him. Don’t go into a crowd where you are taken away from safety. Don’t ignore the calls of your Lord to stay close to Him. When we ignore the call He has placed on our lives to be believers, we are putting ourselves in danger of losing our eternal lives with Him. He will never stop protecting us, but if we ignore His truth, His keeping, we put our very souls at risk.

God keeps you, therefore you are of value. You are a keeper.

My God is…my praise Deuteronomy 10:21

Deuteronomy 10:21 – He is your praise; he is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome Glorifythings that your own eyes have seen.

He is your praise

This is kind of an archaic use of praise as a noun. According to Websters Dictionary – when you use praise as a noun like it’s used in this sentence, it means “one that is praised“. So let’s rewrite that part of the sentence with the definition in there – He is your one that is praised. God is our praise. He is truly the only thing that does deserve our praise. Our children get our praise, but not because they truly earned it. Everything we do, are and have comes from the Lord, so everything turns us back to praise our praise, to praise our God.

He is your God

Definition of GOD

capitalized: the supreme or ultimate reality
2: a being or object believed to have more than natural attributes and powers and to require human worship;specifically : one controlling a particular aspect or part of reality
3: a person or thing of supreme value
4: a powerful ruler
So often we are led astray by seemingly innocuous things. Admiration of a sports star or a movie star can turn to obsession. A drink after work can turn to addiction. Making money becomes the most important thing to us. Striving to have the perfect body keeps us from caring for and participating in our family. Then there are those things that are bad from the start. An abusive boyfriend, a manipulative friend, or a berating boss might have been given god status because we let them be “one controlling a particular aspect or part of reality”. When we let things distract us or control us, we’re not putting God at the head of our lives. We need to have an obsession with God. We need to be in His word so much we can’t go without it. We need to be praying so often we don’t know if we’ve ever stopped. Do we need to do those for salvation, they don’t earn our salvation, but doing them will keep our eyes on the Lord, daily recalling His sacrifice on the cross for us. We couldn’t do anything to cause our own salvation, but doing those things could ensure it. How can I say that, because if you do those things, are in God’s word and are praying to Him constantly, your focus is in the right place, and you will remain in a close relationship with Him. Your faith in Jesus, sparked by the Holy Spirit, through scripture will ensure your salvation.
Who has done for you these great and awesome things that your own eyes have seen.
Have you seen some great and awesome things that the Lord has done? I encourage you to write a list of your blessings. Then I pray that as you go through your day today, you will see God wink at you. Not a real wink (I’m not crazy), but sometimes I feel like God is winking at me through even the mundane things in my life. Maybe things are just working out today. Maybe your friend calls just as you were about to call her. Maybe your mom and dad are so much fun to talk to on the phone they make you laugh and be happy (yes – I did just do that!). To me the Lord is in all of these things. God is with us in all that we do, try to notice Him today. Then pray. Have a conversation with Him, the one who has done for you these great and awesome things that you saw with your own eyes.
What great and awesome things have you seen with your own eyes?

My God is…showing clemency Micah 7:18-19

Micah 7:18-19 – Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity Psalm-107
and passing over the transgression
of the remnant of your possession?
He does not retain his anger forever,
because he delights in showing clemency.
He will again have compassion upon us;
he will tread our iniquities under foot.
You will cast all our sins
into the depths of the sea.

Definition of CLEMENCY

1a : disposition to be merciful and especially to moderate the severity of punishment due
b : an act or instance of leniency
2: pleasant mildness of weather
Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of the remnant of your possession?
How amazing is our God? What boss, what parent, what friend would put up with all we do that is abominable in His eyes? We are consistently falling short of reflecting God’s glory. Especially as those who already know Him, we should know better. We should do better. We wouldn’t be so quick to forgive the outright disobedience and disrespect that we show to our God. But God is better than us. He passes over the transgression to get to the soul. He pardon’s the iniquity so that we can remain in relationship with Him even though we don’t deserve it.

He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in showing clemency.

Does that mean that God doesn’t mind that we do bad things? I don’t think that’s what it means, I just think it means He knows our sins have been dealt with on the cross. He knows our hearts and our intentions. He knows whether or not we are seeking to be more like Him or if we don’t care about having  a relationship with Him. He knows our heart, and like a father forgives the daughter he loves so much, God forgives us. He looks into our eyes and says, “come here and give me a hug.” Not only does he not hold onto His anger forever, He likes to be lenient, to be gracious and merciful.

Maybe an even closer analogy is the love of a grandparent. Grandparents love their grandchildren so much. The often see the stupidity or recklessness of their grandchildren, but when the child’s parent tries to discipline them, the grandparent may say something like, “They didn’t mean to. Please don’t be mad at them.” Like a grandparent shows clemency so God shows us clemency. I know that I’ve told this story before, but it’s my best example of my mother’s clemency. She used to pray that I would not get the full consequences of my sin. She knew as I grew up there would be times that I would be stupid, make bad decisions and probably deserved to get in trouble. My mom didn’t want me to get away with things. She knew I had some lessons to learn, but I think she really didn’t want me to end up in jail or pregnant. By the clemency of God (and some prayers on my moms part) I was not given the full consequences of my sins.

You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.

God, through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, has removed our sins and taken them as far away from us as possible. We don’t have to keep thinking about them. We don’t have to try to pay for them by self-loathing, over compensating or self-neglect. We can, because of what He’s done for us, freely explore the life of significance the Lord has designed for us. We no longer are held captive by the sin of this world. Close your eyes and imagine the Lord taking all your sins from you. Make sure you open the closet of your heart and give Him the ones that are still eating away at your soul. Then imagine you can see Him throwing them down to the depths of the sea. The will never be brought back up by the Lord, make sure you don’t go diving for them.

You have been shown clemency!
