My God is… Revealed Matthew 16:16-18

Matthew 16:16-18 – Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered pull-back-curtainhim, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

revealed  past participle, past tense of re·veal (Verb)

Verb
  1. Make (previously unknown or secret information) known to others.
  2. Cause or allow (something) to be seen.

Cause or allow (something) to be seen.

In our scripture for today, Peter is able to say that Jesus Christ is Lord, and Jesus points out to him that he couldn’t say that unless it was revealed to him from God the father. Knowing God is not something we do on our own. The Father in heaven uses many means by which we come to know Him as God. `He reveals it to us through scripture, baptism and communion.

Make (previously unknown or secret information) known to others.

As Christians, we can’t make someone believe. That’s God’s work, but we can let them know about God. We can tell others about God with our words, but for many people our actions speak louder than words. Some ways we might show evidence of God in our lives:

  • Caring for others (old and young)
  • Responding differently than the world does to pain, stress and unkindness
  • Remembering that everything we do is a witness (sometimes for God, sometimes against Him)
  • Loving those who are not easy to love
  • Putting God above everything else in our lives

Blessed are you! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven

We are blessed to know that Jesus is the Son of God. Knowing that He is our Savior and that we will be able to spend eternity with Him in heaven because of His sacrifice. Living in that freedom isn’t always easy as a human, but when we do, it can get the attention of the unbeliever. God is at work in our world. Let Him use you to reveal Himself to others. You will be blessed!

Are you revealing?

My God is…Obedient Philippians 2:5-11

Philippians 2: 5-11

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; Doing What's Right
rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage

First of all let’s get one thing out-of-the-way. I believe in the Triune God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. There for when I say, “My God is Obedient”, I am speaking about Jesus and especially from the verses above. Jesus is God. He could have come down to earth like the alien in “The day the Earth stood still”.  Ready to destroy the earth for any evils they did towards Him.

He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

But in the verses above we see that Jesus didn’t come to suppress us with His almighty power, but instead humbled Himself and became like us. He had to go through everything we’ve gone through, in fact, much worse. Imagine how it must have felt to know you could destroy anyone who was giving you grief. You could demand they bring you gifts, treasures and bow to you, and giving all that up, because that wouldn’t save them from their horrible fate.

And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

My God, Jesus, became man, a very humbling experience. Because He took on the appearance as a man, He submitted himself to God the father and obeyed Him, just as we are called to obey our God. He was so obedient He didn’t even pull Himself off the cross, or stop the beatings, or shut the mouths of those who ridiculed Him. Instead He did the Father’s will so you and I might be able to go to heaven and spend eternity with Him.

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus

In the passage above from Philippians 2, we’re called to have the same mindset as Christ Jesus. Then it goes on to show us what that looks like, a servant, humble and obedient. Humbleness isn’t thinking poorly about yourself, or doubting your ability, but instead it is an ability to put others ahead of yourself. To be a servant. And obedience, that’s a challenge for all of us at one time or another.

I find this a real challenge, as I work through my doubts, fears and insecurities. This is something I will work on, humbling myself, obeying the Lord and behaving as a servant.

Lord, help me not to be selfish, self-seeking and self-absorbed. Amen

Are you a Servant? Humble? Obedient?

My God is…My Intercessor Job 16:19-21

Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high. My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; on behalf of a man he pleads with God as one pleads for a friend. Job 16: 19-21

God is my intercessor

I don’t always say the right thing. In fact, sometimes I put my foot in it (right Jenny?). Friends who know me well know I’m quick with my words, and that has also led me to be quick with apologies. That’s because when you speak without thinking, you have to apologize a lot.

When I talk to God I don’t apologize

The beauty of talking to God is that I don’t get misunderstood. I have the Holy Spirit interceding for me, making it clear, concise and coherent. At times I think the Holy Spirit is acting like a TV censor, cutting out all my bad words and offensive language. I don’t have to apologize for having the wrong words, the Holy Spirit has my back.

It’s like on a recent episode of Big Bang Theory. Raj, who normally can’t talk to girls much less date them is introduced to a woman who is deaf and communicates through sign language. His friend is their interpreter. Raj however is not saying anything that would be appropriate to tell a girl. His friend, edits and changes what Raj says into what he means.

I think that’s how it must be for the Holy Spirit. He’s probably saying to God the Father, “What Jill meant to say was….”. The Holy Spirit is a much better intercessor than Raj’s friend though. The Holy Spirit keeps the message the same, but improves it. Sometimes He even translates our thoughts, when we are unable to put our feelings into words. It’s amazing to have someone be able to translate for you in such a way!

When words fail me

Sometimes I don’t know what I need. I don’t know what to ask. I don’t know the words. The Holy Spirit does and intercedes for me with the Father. Making sure my message is received.

How does it make you feel to know you have someone interceding on your behalf?
